JA Africa 2014 Strategic Retreat

During the month of July various Junior Achievement (JA) Africa stakeholders converged in Johannesburg, South Africa for the JA Africa 2014 Strategic Planning Retreat. Those attending the retreat included the JA Worldwide CEO and President, Mr Sean Rush, members of the JA Africa Regional Board and Regional Operating Centre, including the President, Dr Chinwe Effiong, and JA Executive Directors from Gabon, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as six of their respective Board Chair’s.

JA Worldwide is a global network of 123 countries, 17 of which are in sub Saharan Africa and form the JA Africa Region. JA Worldwide reached 10 230 680 students in 2013 across six continents, with 200 355 of those from Africa. Given the bulging youth population in Africa and high levels of youth unemployment across the continent, this number is just a fraction of those in need of the enterprise and life skills offered by Junior Achievement.

It is for this reason that JA staff and Board members gathered together in Johannesburg last month to determine how best to expand the reach and impact of JA programmes across the sub-continent. The team deliberated on a range of topics including reviewing the overall performance of the JA Africa region and it various member nations, determining how best to strengthen JA’s presence and programmes in Africa and exploring opportunities for expansion into other countries.

JA Africa’s regional priorities, as set out by the JA Africa Regional Operating Centre, are as follows:

  1. Promoting enterprise and employability of young people
  2. Building meaningful public and private partnerships
  3. Expanding alternative programme delivery methods both in and out of school
  4. Effectively engaging JA Africa alumni as programme facilitators while building their capacity as successful entrepreneurs

The two day retreat included three separate meetings (kindly hosted by Citi South Africa):

  1. The quarterly JA Africa Regional Board meeting;
  2. The Executive Directors meeting and
  3. The Regional Advisory Board Meeting (Consisting of Country Board Chair’s and resulting in the Launch of the Country Board Chairs [CBC] Forum)

The Country Board Chair’s Forum is a key new initiative which will meet once per annum in rotating JA Member Countries. This initiative is being driven by the Board Chair of JA South Africa, and was launched in response to the need to strengthen the governance and leadership roles of the various country Boards in Africa. Ms Dolly Mokgatle will chair the Forum for the first two years. The next Forum will be hosted by JA Nigeria.

As Dr Chinwe Effiong, President of JA Africa noted, Africa is endowed with an abundance of resources, the most important being its human resources. However, these resources need to be developed, at all levels, from early childhood onward. JA is well positioned to assist governments and corporations to nurture the next generation of professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders. However, this can only be accomplished through strategic collaboration and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.   It is therefore very timely that the Country Board Chair Forum is being launched!

The day culminated in a gala dinner, hosted by JA South Africa, at the historic Women’s Gaol at Constitution Hill, where delegates and other guests had an opportunity to interact and share their JA experiences with one another. The evening included informative talks from JA South Africa Board Chair, Ms Dolly Mokgatle, Patron Ms Wendy Luhabe and Alumnus, Ms Takura Mutemasago, as well as an enlightening discussion on entrepreneurship in South Africa by Dr Taddy Blecher.

The two-day retreat concluded with site visits to JA South Africa programmes in Thokoza and Kempton Park respectively. During the site visits, guests were encouraged to provide the programme participants with advice and guidance on their small businesses.

Sandtonview Combined School Wins the SA Social Innovation Relay Again!

Junior Achievement South Africa learners have been competing in the Social Innovation Relay for four years and this is the second time a team from Sandtonview Combined School have walked away with the national title.   This year more than 1 000 learners from 10 schools in Gauteng competed between February and June.

The Social Innovation Relay is an annual global competition, funded by HP. During the competition learners participate in an innovation workshop, where they are taught about social innovation, after which in teams of three or four they conceptualise a business that would uplift their immediate communities. This year, more than 2,000 teams from 18 countries, supported by nearly 400 HP volunteers, submitted papers and presented their business concepts. Teams from each country compete at national finals, and these winning teams then compete against each other in the online global finals.

100 ideas were uploaded to the Social Innovation Relay website and the best 20 ideas were selected by Nosipho Malotana, an experienced Junior Achievement South Africa facilitator. During the July school holidays, these teams all gathered at HP South Africa’s head office in Rivonia, Johannesburg, and over three days, each team was required to develop their concepts into comprehensive presentations with the assistance of dedicated HP volunteer mentors, who spent many hours with their teams, ensuring they were ready to participate in the SIR national final. The finals were held at HP’s Johannesburg offices on 3rd July 2014, where the top ten teams were required to present their developed concepts to a panel of esteemed HP judges. Teams from Allanridge, Makgetse, McAuley House and Sandtonview High Schools were represented in these finals. The judges scored the teams on content, innovation and creativity, social impact, and the global scalability and feasibility of the concept.

The winning team, Re(D)y from Sandtonview Combined School, identified the current textbook shortages and low accessibility to technology South African learners face, as a serious problem facing their community and South Africans as a whole. Their solution, the Table Tablet, a large tablet computer installed into a school desk, could be used instead of textbooks.  Teachers would be able to upload lessons, homework and study guides to the tablet.  Learners would access the table tablets using their LET cards, which would allow learners to access their information from any pc or tablet, meaning that their school work is available anywhere.  The main aim of the table tablet is to make information more accessible to the youth.

On 8th July, Team Re(D)y participated in the global finals of the competition, and presented their concept online to a global panel of judges. Team Malre from Kenya walked away as winners for their innovative solution to combat malaria. Team Re(D)y performed well and gained valuable experience in social innovation and presentation skills.

MasterCard Continues to Invest in Entrepreneurship: Sponsors 520 Learners

R1 million donation equips South African learners with knowledge and skills to start up a business

 Johannesburg, 12 June 2014 Five hundred and twenty learners from 14schools in seven provinces are participating in the 2014 Junior Achievement (JA) South Africa Mini Enterprise Programme, thanks to a R1 million donation from MasterCard.  This is the fourth consecutive year that MasterCard has supported the globally-recognised JA South Africa programme, which fosters entrepreneurship among South Africa’s youth.

JA South Africa is the local chapter of Junior Achievement, a global non-profit organisation that partners with business communities, educators and volunteers to develop much-needed entrepreneurial skills that prepare learners for the working world after high school.

The Grade 10 and 11 learners participating in the 15-week Mini Enterprise Programme are predominantly female and attend a weekly three-hour class after school. During these sessions, learners are taught workplace readiness as well as entrepreneurial and financial literacy skills.

Youth unemployment in South Africa is one of the highest in the world. According to Stats SA’s Quarter 1 2014 Quarterly Labour Force Survey, 36 percent of all young people under the age of 34 are unemployed, and those that are working are more likely to be employed in precarious conditions.

“This programme will equip these young learners with the skills that they will need to launch their own businesses, so that they in turn can employ others,” said Linda McClure, MD of JA South Africa. “A project like this will help break the cycle of unemployment faced by school leavers that threatens the future of South Africa’s youth, and will promote job creation, which is one of government’s top priorities.”

Facilitated by JA South Africa-trained facilitators, the programme is divided into theory and practical sessions. The learners will initially focus on business theory, including accounting, cash flow and marketing. They will then gain practical business experience by developing a product or service of their choice in response to their own market research, and will then market the product to their community.

Through the programme, learners also gain important interpersonal skills and confidence, which are required in the work environment. MasterCard volunteers will also be invited to share their business experience and advice with the learners to further inspire them

“Over the past four years that we have supported JA South Africa, over 1,000 learners have participated in the various entrepreneurship programmes, and most of them are young women, ” says Philip Panaino, Division President, MasterCard, South Africa.

“South Africa has come a long way in giving women access to education and regular employment opportunities, which are essential building blocks to further empowerment, financial independence and leadership. This programme addresses all of these building blocks in its course content, and we look forward to welcoming these learners into the business world when they emerge as successful entrepreneurs.

JASA to win in Sunshine Tour Media Challenge

The 2013 Sunshine Tour Media Challenge will be hosted at The Els Club Copperleaf for the third year on Monday 14 October. 40 members of the media will take on 40 Sunshine Tour professionals at match play with the R5 000 at stake in each match going to charity.

In addition, the media and professionals will be competing for the Khan-Winter trophy. This trophy is named after two of South Africa’s veteran golf writers Iqbal Khan of the Daily News, KwaZulu-Natal, and Grant Winter of the Star, Johannesburg.

The R200 000 stake in the Sunshine Tour Media Challenge has been sponsored by Investec. If a match is won by the member of the media, the R5 000 will go to the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA) Maths and English Programme. In partnership with the Department of Basic Education, the programme aims to develop high quality teachers of Mathematics, Science and English through a school-based training model located in ISASA schools. In the end, the goal is to broaden the pool of quality teachers.

If a match is won by a Sunshine Tour professional, the R5 000 will go to Junior Achievement South Africa. JASA is a nationwide, non-profit organisation that offers experiential entrepreneurial business, financial literacy and workplace readiness programmes for young people. JASA is a member of Junior Achievement Worldwide, one of the largest business education organisations in the world, operating in over 120 countries globally, including 17 in Africa.

The Sunshine Tour Media Challenge started in 2011, and the professionals won 45 of the 50 matches. Things were a bit closer last year, when the professionals pulled off a closer victory, this time by 32.5 matches to 17.5.

The professionals will have to play the four par-fives on the tough Els Club Copperleaf layout as par-fours, which means the amateurs will have their handicaps as well as four more strokes at their disposal.

Two JASA Alumni Feature in Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans

Junior Achievement South Africa is proud to announce that TWO of our successful alumni have been included in this years Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans edition.
This is the eighth year that Mail & Guardian have searched for 200 young, inspiring South Africans to feature. “Half-a-dozen researchers independently scour the country for three months searching for interesting young people doing amazing things. We also take our readers’ nominations—more than 1 200 came through this year—and sift through them for the best of the bunch. Our editorial staff and our most reliable sources send in their recommendations. Then we whittle down our long list into a short list and ultimately into a final list of young people who then are profiled by a team of writers and presented across our platforms. Each year we find 200 young people, aged 35 and under, who were born here or have made South Africa their home, and who are full of talent, dreams and drive,” noted Tanya Pampalone, Executive Editor, 200 Young South Africans.

You may have seen Ntuthuko’s story in various publications last year. He was selected as one of our Faces of JASA 2012. Ntuthuko completed his JASA programme in 1997 and the programme sparked his interest in entrepreneurship, which eventually lead to him starting his own panel beating shop. Ntuthuko is still a loyal follower of JASA and he is always first in line to give back to the organisation by offering to share his story and provide field trips to his workshop to learners and learners currently on JASA programmes.

Happy Khambule is also a strong supporter of Junior Achievement South Africa. After completing the Mini Enterprise Programme in 2006, Happy went on to complete the Banks in Action and Success Skills programmes in 2007 and JA Titan in 2008. Happy went on to be elected as Financial Manager of the JASA Youth Council in 2008. Since then, Happy has always been willing to assist JASA with mentoring and events. Most recently Happy gave up five days from his busy schedule to mentor a group of five learners during the Investec Junior Innovators Competition. Happy is another one of Junior Achievement South Africa’s most promising alumni.

Ntuthuko SheziNtuthuko Shezi
If you need to catch a flight from OR Tambo airport and your car has a dent, or a cracked windscreen, Scratch Mobile will fix it for you while you are away. Scratch Mobile is the brainchild of 32-year-old Ntuthuko Shezi, whose passion for business stemmed from a desire to change his family’s financial situation. He grew up in rural Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal, with a single mother, a teacher who sold sweets, fish and vetkoek for extra money at the school she worked at, and Shezi would often help her. His grandparents kept cows for milk and grew their own fruit and vegetables. The family had no electricity. These difficulties have led to Shezi’s dream of being a future Ndwedwe ward councillor. When he left his job in management consulting he fortuitously recognised a gap in the panel-beating industry. Even through he did not have a clue about panel beating, his degree in engineering from the University of Cape Town made it easier for him to demystify in his head a subject many see as rocket science. His history in management alerted him to the fact that the industry was known for offering little compassion and care to customers and he wanted to change this and give customers who needed their cars fixed an option that was convenient for them and put their needs first. Scratch Mobile, which does panel beating, spray painting and auto glass repairs and replacements, is the first known business of its kind in the world and Shezi is looking to expand, as its success has been exceptional. The business fixes between 170 and 200 cars every month and has a turnover of a few million a year. His aim is to be a game-changer, not just to do things the way they have been done for a long time. — Ilham Rawoot

Happy Khambule

Happy Khambule
Happy Khambule loves being part of a collective. It’s his “we” attitude that makes him a British Council Global Changemaker and International Climate Champion. Khambule, a climate-change activist with a law degree, dreamt in early childhood of being president. Now he not only aspires to shape South Africa’s environmental policies but also to effect real change within communities, working with schools and the youth to create awareness of climate change. Although he has big ambitions he doesn’t allow them to overshadow his passions. The work he does as Gauteng co-ordinator of Project 90 x 2030 allows him to strike the right balance between the two. The project challenges society to change the way it lives in order to preserve the environment. The aim is to reduce our carbon footprint by 90% by the year 2030. Khambule’s philosophy is that “every generation equips the next generation with knowledge”. It is his job to get schools in the province to change their attitude towards the environment by setting up green clubs and educating pupils about sustainable behaviours. In light of his involvement with Ashoka Youth Ventures, a global project that gets young people thinking about how to address social issues, it is only natural that the work he does focuses so strongly on change. But getting people to change has its own challenges. To keep the youth interested and involved in climate change Khambule and his team continually have to think of more innovative and exciting campaigns using social media and whatever other tools are available. His mom has always told him to enjoy whatever it is that he does. Khambule takes that advice further. He loves what he does — working with people and making change happen. “When you see change happen and it has come about from a collective effort that is perfect.” — Caroline Cowan

Youth Enterprise Development Programme Students Graduate

On the 8th of May 2013, Junior Achievement South Africa concluded another successful Youth Enterprise Development Programme, funded by the DG Murray Trust, with a commemorative certification ceremony for the graduates of the programme.  The certification ceremony was held at the Siyafunda Community Training College in Orange Farm.

The programme is an intensive three to four month experience during which students meet once or twice a week for three hours.  Applying an action learning methodology, the programme is designed for out of school youth between the ages of 18 and 35, and is aimed at encouraging unemployed youth to start their own businesses. The project also includes workplace readiness skills, life skills, financial literacy and banking and saving.

The programme was launched in January 2013 at the Orange Farm Community Centre and was facilitated by one of JASA’s well-trained facilitators, Mr James Sekhonyane.  James glowed with pride on Wednesday, as he congratulated the 32 students that had successfully completed the programme.

The students had formed small businesses of two – four individuals, with each company determining what product or service they would offer.  In total 11 sustainable businesses were created during the programme, each supplying the community with a different product or service, including a hair and beauty salon, a pest control service, fast foods, baked goods and household linen.

The best performing business, Freggies, was awarded R1 000 prize money.  The winners were determined by evaluating business plans and financial records, while taking into account the team’s attendance and participation during the programme.  The members of Freggies identified the need for a local fruit and vegetable stall in their area as community members had to walk long distances to purchase such foods.  Their business plan explained their marketing, operations, finance and development plans exceptionally well and their excellent record keeping indicated daily profit which increased considerably over the duration of the programme.

“I am exceptionally proud of all of the Orange Farm graduates,” noted Estelle McLaughlin, National Programmes Coordinator.  “This group of students have worked especially hard throughout the programme and the number of successful businesses started is a clear indicator of their success.  I’d like to thank the programme facilitator, James, for all of his hard work and dedication .” She concluded.

Junior Achievement South Africa launches Innovation Camps with support from BlackBerry

South Africa, 17 May 2013: Junior Achievement South Africa today announced it is working with BlackBerry® to kick off the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Innovation Camps, with 1,000 high-school learners from 14 countries expected to compete. Supported by volunteer mentors from BlackBerry, the learners will be tasked to come up with solutions to a variety of STEM related business challenges.

Aiming to motivate learners aged 15-18 to consider STEM oriented careers, the Innovation Camps are an initiative developed through a collaboration between BlackBerry and JA-YE Europe.

The Innovation Camps help raise awareness among secondary school learners of STEM related business challenges, showcase industry role models, and lead the way to showing that skills-based Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes have a vital role to play in the future of education and aligning curriculums with business needs.

During the Innovation Camps, the learners can develop practical business skills and are encouraged to adopt entrepreneurial thinking. The events focus on fostering young people’s problem solving and innovation skills. Learners are given a specific challenge to solve within a set period of time. The link between business and education helps students to develop skills that are relevant to the workplace and allows them to apply their academic learning to real life situations.

“Recently the World Economic Forum’s Global Information Technology Report ranked South Africa’s Maths and Science education second last in the world. This embarrassing position clearly demonstrates the need for us to promote and provide support for subjects such as Maths, Science, Technology and Engineering,” noted Linda McClure, Managing Director of Junior Achievement South Africa. “The Blackberry Innovation camps are a prime example of an inventive way for corporates to aid the Basic Education Department in improving the level of Maths and Science skills in our learners.”

“BlackBerry was built on innovation and is a strong supporter of science, engineering, technology and math in education. We are proud to support Junior Achievement as they engage young people and encourage them to think outside of the box,” said Renata Rusiniak, Manager, Citizenship at BlackBerry.

Learners, mentored by volunteers from BlackBerry, may enter in teams to develop solutions related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The winning team from South Africa will compete globally in an online final against the other national winning teams worldwide on June 13, 2013.

In South Africa, the STEM Innovation Camp will take place on 17 May 2013 at Gold Reef City Theme Park.
